Report Finds Almost Half of UK OOH Advertising Revenue Goes Back Into the UK Economy

Summary: A report from PwC, commissioned by Outsmart, has found that the UK Out of Home (OOH) sector contributed over ÂŁ411m to the UK economy, supporting public services, infrastructure, communities, and employees in 2021, representing 46% of its advertising revenue.
Since 2009, OOH media owners have invested ÂŁ1.1bn into public infrastructure, with the installation and maintenance of bus shelters, free telecoms services, and even lifesaving defibrillators, along with directly contributing ÂŁ188m towards public finances through business rates and rent in 2021 alone.Â
In this same report, PwC estimated that a further ÂŁ29m helped to support charities and communities through direct donations, heavily discounted or donated media space, and staff hours given to charity.Â
This report was based on a survey of OOH media owners representing 92% of industry revenue, and highlights other more indirect benefits such as over 90% of electricity consumption from electronic OOH advertising boards coming from renewable sources. Additionally, these same boards are increasingly being manufactured from recycled and recyclable materials.
Overall, this report demonstrates that OOH advertising is not just a great avenue for marketers and brands, but it is also hugely beneficial to local communities and public infrastructure.
