Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW), a global travel hub and the second largest airport in the world, sought to enhance the passenger experience with an innovative wayfinding solution. Partnering with Synect, a leading digital experience agency, and Atrius, a provider of mapping SDKs, DFW envisioned a network of touch-screen kiosks that would empower travelers to navigate the airport with ease. The challenge was to create an accessible and user-friendly application that could function reliably offline, while progressively enhancing its features when internet connectivity was available.

Our Solution:

Blindfold joined forces with Synect and Atrius to develop a cutting-edge touch-screen application tailored to the unique demands of DFW Airport.

Offline-First Functionality: We built the core functionality of the application to operate seamlessly offline, ensuring passengers could access critical wayfinding information even in areas with limited connectivity. This included a custom map solution, points of interest, and essential airport information.

Progressive Enhancement: When internet connectivity was available, the application seamlessly integrated real-time data, such as flight information, gate changes, and estimated walking times. This progressive enhancement provided passengers with the most up-to-date information to navigate their journey efficiently.

Bespoke Map Solution: Leveraging PixiJS, a powerful game engine, we developed a custom map solution tailored to DFW's complex layout. This interactive map provided intuitive navigation, allowing passengers to easily locate gates, amenities, and points of interest within the airport.

Universal Accessibility: We prioritized accessibility, designing the touch-screen interface with features for users with varying levels of dexterity. This included d-pad integration for those who may struggle with large touch screens, ensuring a user-friendly experience for all passengers.

Multilingual Support: To cater to DFW's diverse passenger base, we ensured the application was fully translated into eight different languages. This facilitated seamless navigation for travelers from around the globe, enhancing their overall airport experience.

Integrated Barcode Scanning: We integrated a proprietary API with the IER 602 flatbed multi-format barcode reader, enabling passengers to scan their boarding passes and instantly access their flight information within the application. This streamlined the travel experience and reduced reliance on printed documents.
